In aviation, we often talk about aircraft, systems, and operational capability. But long before any pilot steps into a commercial cockpit, the foundations of safety are built in training.
At the centre of that training environment is the Chief Flight Instructor.
The Multifaceted Responsibilities of a Chief Flight Instructor
The role carries far more than oversight of flight training. A Chief Flight Instructor is responsible for maintaining standards, guiding instructors, developing sound judgement in students, and ensuring that discipline and professionalism are embedded from the start.
Under the oversight of the South African Civil Aviation Authority, this responsibility carries real accountability.
1.9.3. Chief Flying Instructor (CFI)
1) The CFI shall be responsible for the supervision of flight and FSTD instructor and for the standardisation of flight instruction and synthetic flight instruction. The CFI shall:
a) hold the highest professional pilot licence related to the flying training courses conducted.
b) hold the rating(s) related to the flying training courses conducted.
c) hold a flight instructor rating for at least one of the types of aircraft used on the course; and
d) have completed 1000 hours PIC flight time of which a minimum of 500 hours shall be on flying instructional duties related to the flying courses conducted, of which 200 hours may be instrument ground time.
The Crucial Role of Training in Aviation Safety
Aircraft and technology continue to improve, but aviation safety still depends on the quality of training. Good habits, sound decision-making, and respect for procedure do not happen by chance. They are taught, reinforced, and upheld over time.
The Impact of the Chief Flight Instructor on Pilot Training
Every first solo, every licence issued, and every pilot who enters the industry carries something of that training system with them. Behind that system is the leadership of the Chief Flight Instructor.
It is a role that helps shape not only individual pilots, but the standard of aviation itself.
