Our Training

Excellence in aviation training for national and international private students and organisations.

Helicopter flight training represents a huge investment in time and capital for individuals and organisations and, as such, great care is taken in every aspect. We invest in the development of our experienced instructors who are all exposed to the diversity of operations under the Henley Air roof: this ensures that instruction is pragmatic, professional and relevant. All of our training syllabi are developed in-house, drawing from our decades of experience in the industry as well as monitoring the latest techniques and developments from the worldwide aviation industry.

Our diverse training fleet include Leonardo, Bell and Robinson aircraft which are expertly maintained by our principal Air Maintenance Organisation (AMO) provider, situated in the adjacent hanger.

We have also invested in the only Bell 222 helicopter flight simulator in the world to further expand our training offerings.

Private Pilots Licence (PPL(H)

A helicopter Private Pilots License Helicopter (PPL(H)) gives the holder the privileges necessary to fly a helicopter recreationally or build time towards a Commercial Pilots License (CPL (H)).

Commercial Pilots Licence (CPL(H)

A Commercial Pilots License Helicopter (CPL(H)) allows the holder to work for a charter company as a helicopter pilot, while being remunerated for their flying services.

Night Rating

A Night Rating (NR) allows the holder of a PPL(H), CPL(H) or Airline Transport Pilots License (ATPL(H)) to exercise his/her privileges during legal night time.

Instrument Rating

An Instrument Rating (IR) is a rating that allows the holder of a PPL(H), CPL(H) or ATPL(H) to fly in Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC).

Instructors Rating

An Instructors Rating (Grade 3) allows the holder of a CPL(H) or ATPL(H) to give instruction to a student wishing to obtain a PPL(H).

Sling/External Load Rating

A Sling/External Load Rating allows a CPL(H) or ATPL(H) pilot to lift cargo that is attached underneath the helicopter rather than held internally.

Night Vision Imaging Systems (NVIS)

Night Vision Imaging Systems (NVIS), involve the use of Night Vision Goggles (NVG), special lighting systems and trained crew to operate and land helicopters in areas that would be too dark for operators without the equipment to use.

Multi-crew Co-operation (MCC) training assists pilots to work together in a cockpit to achieve goals in a safe and effective manner.

Crew Resource Management

Henley Air Flight Training is an accredited provider of Initial, Refresher and Single-Pilot Crew Resource Management (CRM) courses.

Initial Skills Sets, Conversions, Validations

Henley Air Flight Training can complete initial IR, CPL(H), ATPL(H) and Flight Instructor ratings as well as their revalidations. We can also facilitate conversions and validations from foreign licenses to South African licenses.

Initial Turbine Rating

Gas Turbine engines are truly a fascinating and miraculous feat of engineering. Transitioning to helicopters that are powered by turbine engines entails a significant amount of theoretical training and study to improve understanding of the inner workings of such an engine.

This course is highly recommended for those individuals wishing to enter the corporate flying world.  This is the highest certification level a helicopter pilot can achieve.

A Pilots first multi-engine conversion represents a significant milestone in their career. Multi-engine helicopter types not only represent an investment for an operation, but also in the crew, who require extensive training to come to terms with the complexity of systems, procedures, and performance, inherent to such aircraft.

Marine Pilot and Offshore Training

For those who are thinking of becoming a commercial pilot but are worried about the current airline situation, it may be worth considering the offshore helicopter industry. The flying is challenging and well paid, while the locations you could end up working in are spread around the globe.

Online Examinations and Invigilation

Henley Air Flight Training is a SACAA accredited online examination facility and all PPL(H) exams may be completed at our premises. Our PPL(H) online exam facilities are open to all PPL(H) students irrespective of which flight school you choose to train with.
